Day trip to Mallorca

Today we headed to the island of Mallorca. We had to be up early (like 545am) in order to get ready and to our flight on time. Lauren let me know she is NOT ok with this non-stop traveling, so tomorrow we will be taking it a bit easier. But today, we are going to explore Mallorca.

The flight was all of 30 minutes. It is always much easier to go through security for day trips, no luggage to check or carry on. Lauren and I sat by each other on the flight, even without paying for seat assignments. When we landed we had to pick up our rental car for the day. We found a crazy good deal for $20 for the day. We decided at the last minute to pay for the protection insurance from Orbitz, just in case.

After getting our brand new Toyota hybrid we headed out to the Drach Caves. It is about an hour from the airport. We got to the caves about 45 minutes early so we headed to the local little town to grab a snack and relax for a bit before we went to the caves.

Lauren had found these caves and it sure was a unique experience. We even joked it seemed like a Disney ride line. The caves are only open for a few tours a day, so everyone queues up and goes down into the caves together. Its like 20 minutes of walking into the caves – with beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, and some lakes. It houses the largest underground lake in the world apparently as well.

When you make your way to the lake, they usher you into an area with lots of benches. Everyone sits down and a little concert begins. A piano, cello and violin (all on a row boat) come by in front of the benches and circles back around to go back to the beginning. It is about a ten minute show. After the show everyone exists the caves up like 200 steps. It was a super cool experience.

After the caves we headed to Alcudia, a town on the north side of the island. On the drive, Lauren was able to find us a place to lunch, so we made a quick detour to a Lidl – a store very similar to Aldi. After we stocked up for €11 – pastries, juices, fruit – it was so cheap!! After our Lidl stop, it was off to our lunch spot. It was about 15 minutes south of Alcudia and again, Lauren nailed it.

We took a quick jaunt over to the beach because we were a little early for our reservation. After taking in the beauty of the sea – we headed back to lunch. I ended up getting the lobster! And we shared a salad. It was another wonderful meal and a time to enjoy the weather.

We had about an hour in Alcudia before we needed to head back to Palma, where the airport is for our flight back to Barcelona. The roads were more highway, less backroads – so it was an easier drive back. When we got back to Palma, we decided to see if we could get a parking spot near the beach, and if we could we would stop. Well, we got a spot! So again, we went to spend a bit of time in the fresh sea air. We got our sun setting selfie and headed back to the car to head to the airport.

We stopped for fuel and dropped our car off. At 7pm, most places were already closing at the airport so I was thankful that Lauren had found us such a good lunch place. We walked around the airport a bit and finally boarded the flight to come home.

It was a bit of a long day with the airport time, but it was a successful day for sure!
